Objectives:
In seasonal calving dairy herds, cows detected in oestrus are artificially inseminated (AI'd) from the start of the herd's breeding period (mating start date). After the herd's AI period, bulls are run with the lactating herd for a further period. Artificial inseminations are usually recorded but bull services are not consistently detected or recorded. Pregnancy diagnosis occurs at varying intervals after MSD, and conception date estimates for cows diagnosed pregnant are usually informed by the cow's AI dates. Estimated conception dates are used to predict calving dates by adding 282 days, and farmers then make management decisions (e.g. dry-off dates, dry cow feeding decisions) and culling decisions based on these data. The aims of this study were to describe the accuracy of transrectal manual and ultrasonography pregnancy diagnosis undertaken under commercial conditions in dairy cows in seasonal calving herds for predicting the cow's next calving date, and to assess potential risk factors for differences between actual and predicted calving dates.
