Hypothyreose ist die beim Hund am häufigsten diagnostizierte endokrine Störung und führt zu zahlreichen sehr unterschiedlichen klinischen Anomalien. Übergewichtige Hunde sollten generell auf eine Vielzahl verschiedener Erkrankungen, einschließlich der Hypothyreose, untersucht werden. Grundlage für die genaue Diagnose dieser Erkrankung ist eine sorgfältig erhobene Anamnese, eine klinische Untersuchung und die Interpretation von Laborergebnissen.

- Hypothyreose ist die häufigste endokrine Erkrankung bei Hunden. Jeder übergewichtige Hund sollte auf eine Vielzahl von Krankheiten, einschließlich dieser Endokrinopathie, untersucht werden.
- Hypothyreose kann sich auf vielerlei Arten manifestieren, die meisten betroffenen Hunde haben jedoch allgemeine Stoffwechselstörungen und auch dermatologische Probleme sind typisch für die Erkrankung.
- Die Bestimmung der T4-Konzentration im Serum ist der am häufigsten verwendete initiale Test zur Beurteilung der Schilddrüsenfunktion. Dieser Test weist eine hohe Sensitivität, aber eine geringere Spezifität auf und kann durch zahlreiche Faktoren beeinträchtigt werden.
- Erhöhte T4-Werte bei einem Hund mit Verdacht auf Hypothyreose sollten für den Tierarzt ein Alarmzeichen für die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer autoimmunen Thyreoiditis sein.
