    Introduzione

    Sin dagli anni ’50, sono stati sviluppati e commercializzati in tutto il mondo numerosi vaccini per il cane e il gatto e molti altri sono attualmente in via di sviluppo. Tuttavia, si stima che nei paesi sviluppati, solo il 30-50% dei cani sia correttamente immunizzato e per quanto riguarda i gatti la situazione è probabilmente peggiore. Immunizzare correttamente una percentuale maggiore della popolazione di animali da compagnia potrebbe aiutare a ridurre la prevalenza delle malattie infettive.

    Negli ultimi anni, è stata posta un’enfasi crescente sulla sicurezza dei vaccini per gli animali da compagnia. Per alcuni vaccini, è stato raccomandato il passaggio da protocolli di immunizzazione annuali a protocolli triennali, con la somministrazione di altri vaccini in base al rischio di esposizione. Linee guida per la selezione dei vaccini e la loro somministrazione sono state pubblicate da associazioni quali American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD) e World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) (1-4). Nonostante alcune variazioni nelle linee guida emanate dalle varie associazioni, queste direttive combinate con una solida conoscenza dei principi della vaccinazione possono aiutare i veterinari a prendere decisioni razionali sull’argomento. Questo articolo rivede i principi fondamentali della vaccinazione e indica al tempo stesso i regimi vaccinali per proteggere cani e gatti domestici dalle malattie infettive per cui sono ampiamente disponibili vaccini in ogni parte del mondo.     • I vaccini variano nella loro composizione e capacità di produrre una valida immunità.
    • I vaccini devono essere conservati e somministrati secondo le raccomandazioni allegate con il prodotto. Non farlo può rendere inefficace l’immunizzazione.
    • I vaccini proteggono raramente tutti i soggetti cui sono somministrati da infezioni e malattie. Un gran numero di fattori influenza la produzione di unarisposta immunitaria.
    • Il veterinario deve conoscere usi e limiti dei dosaggi anticorpali, al fine di valutare lo stato di immunizzazione di un animale.
