Die Diagnose von Zahnerkrankungen verlangt eine initiale Untersuchung der Maulhöhle, gefolgt von einer endgültigen Untersuchung der Maulhöhle unter Allgemeinanästhesie.

Geeignete Zahninstrumente (z.B. Dentalsonde, Parodontalsonde) zusammen mit ergänzenden diagnostischen Tests je nach Indikation (z.B. Zahnröntgenaufnahmen) sind wesentliche Voraussetzungen für eine genaue Diagnose.

Für eine korrekte Diagnose sind Dentalröntgenaufnahmen eher geeignet als konventionelle Röntgenaufnahmen.
