Einleitung
Bei der Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) handelt es sich nicht um einen einzelnen Krankheitsprozess, sondern vielmehr um einen früher häufig verwendeten Oberbegriff für eine Gruppe verschiedener Erkrankungen der Harnblase und der Urethra bei der Katze. Sämtliche dieser Erkrankungen führen letztlich zu denselben klinischen Symptomen: Dysurie, Strangurie, Hämaturie, Pollakisurie, Periurie (Harnabsatz an ungeeigneten Stellen, z. B. außerhalb der Katzentoilette) und gelegentlich auch urethrale Obstruktion. In einigen Fällen ist nur eines dieser klinischen Anzeichen festzustellen, in der Regel werden betroffene Katzen aber mit unterschiedlichen Kombinationen mehrerer dieser Symptome zur Untersuchung vorgestellt.

Feline Idiopathische Zystitis (FIC) ist die mit Abstand häufigste Ursache sowohl nichtobstruktiver als auch obstruktiver Symptome der ableitenden Harnwege bei der Katze.

Katzen mit Urethrapfropfen ohne nachweisbaren zugrunde liegenden Krankheitsprozess (wie z. B. Urolithiasis) haben mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit eine FIC und müssen dementsprechend behandelt werden.

Die abdominale Radiographie ist die wichtigste diagnostische Maßnahme bei Katzen mit obstruktiven Symptomen im Bereich der ableitenden Harnwege.

Eine Erhöhung der Wasserzufuhr und eine Verbesserung der Umwelt der Katze sind entscheidende Faktoren der Langzeitbehandlung einer FIC.
