Introducción
La enfermedad del tracto urinario inferior felina (ETUIF) es el término empleado para designar al conjunto de enfermedades de la vejiga y uretra del gato, y por tanto, no se trata de una única enfermedad. Todas estas enfermedades englobadas en la ETUIF cursan con los mismos signos: disuria, estranguria, hematuria, polaquiuria, periuria (orinar en lugares inapropiados - por ejemplo, fuera del arenero), y en ocasiones obstrucción uretral. Aunque a veces sólo se observa un signo, normalmente se suelen dar varias combinaciones de los citados anteriormente.

La cistitis idiopática felina (CIF) es la principal causa de signos, tanto obstructivos como no obstructivos, de la enfermedad del tracto urinario inferior.

El principal diagnóstico diferencial en el caso de gatos con tapones uretrales sin una enfermedad subyacente (por ejemplo, urolitiasis) es la CIF, por lo que se debe tener en cuenta en el tratamiento.
