La diabetes mellitus es una endocrinopatía frecuente en los gatos. La incidencia de la enfermedad está aumentando, probablemente debido al aumento de los factores de riesgo, como la obesidad, la inactividad física y la edad avanzada. Las cifras exactas son difíciles de conseguir y aunque los casos no registrados son ciertamente elevados, en un reciente estudio sobre una población de gatos del Reino Unido se indicó una prevalencia del 0,43% (1). - La mayoría de los gatos con diabetes desarrollan un tipo de diabetes similar a la diabetes de tipo 2 humana.
- El diagnóstico se basa en los signos clínicos y en la hiperglucemia/glucosuria persistente. En la evaluación inicial no sólo se debe aclarar la gravedad de la enfermedad, sino que también se debe buscar cualquier enfermedad concomitante u otros factores implicados.
- El tratamiento debe iniciarse inmediatamente tras el diagnóstico. La administración de insulina y de una dieta apropiada, son las piedras angulares del tratamiento.
- La mayoría de los gatos pueden estabilizarse adecuadamente en los 3 primeros meses de tratamiento. Si los signos clínicos persisten a pesar del tratamiento, se recomienda su estudio de forma ordenada y sistemática
