Cuando la producción de orina es escasa o nula (oliguria o anuria respectivamente) se trata de una situación grave y de alto riesgo que puede darse en el curso de diferentes patologías. Se define oliguria como la producción de orina < 0,5 ml/kg/h ó < 2 ml/kg/h en animales con fluidoterapia. Se define anuria como la producción de orina < 0,2 ml/kg/h o la ausencia de orina. [...]

Las causas pre- y post- renales de oliguria o anuria se deben identificar mediante el examen clínico incluyendo pruebas diagnósticas y determinando la densidad urinaria.

En función de cada caso, el tratamiento de urgencia incluirá el tratamiento del shock, restablecimiento del equilibrio ácido-base y de los electrolitos.

Una vez rehidratado el paciente, se puede forzar la diuresis mediante fluidoterapia o por diuresis osmótica. En los casos en los que exista riesgo de sobrehidratación o si existe hiperpotasemia se recomienda el uso de furosemida.

Los parámetros vitales, incluyendo la presión arterial, la diuresis, concentraciones plasmáticas de electrólitos y equilibrio ácido-base se deben monitorizar estrechamente.

Si después de 12-24 horas no se ha restablecido la diuresis se debe valorar la diálisis peritoneal o la hemodiálisis.
