    Introducción

    ¿Por qué es importante conocer el contenido energético de los alimentos para perros y gatos? Porque si conocemos la energía del alimento y la cantidad consumida podremos saber las calorías que ingiere el animal. De este modo, el veterinario podrá recomendar con precisión la cantidad de alimento que el propietario debe administrar a su mascota. Esto es especialmente importante cuando se realiza un cambio de alimento o cuando el animal recibe diferentes alimentos. Posiblemente, los propietarios no tengan en cuenta las variaciones que existen entre los diferentes fabricantes a la hora de interpretar las guías de racionamiento y el cálculo de la energía del alimento.

    Conocer la energía de los alimentos permite su comparación con mayor detalle. Si se toma como base un valor fijo de energía para los diferentes alimentos se pueden comparar varias características, como el conte- nido de determinados nutrientes o el coste. De esta forma, es posible comparar alimentos muy diferentes, e incluso un alimento seco con un alimento húmedo. Algunos fabricantes proporcionan información sobre el contenido energético de los alimentos, aunque la obligatoriedad de indicarlo depende de la legislación de cada país. Además, no existe un método estandarizado para calcular la energía.

    En la Tabla 1 se explica cómo calcular el contenido ener- gético de los diferentes alimentos para perros y gatos.

    Los alimentos varían en cuanto a su contenido energético, el cual depende principalmente del nivel de humedad, proteínas, grasas y carbohidratos, y (en el caso de los macronutrientes) de sus respectivas digestibilidades. Generalmente, los alimentos secos poseen una mayor densidad energética por unidad de peso que los alimentos húmedos. El contenido energético de los alimentos húmedos puede variar entre 70-130 kcal/100 g de alimento, mientras que en los alimentos secos el contenido energético es de unos 280-480 kcal/100 g de alimento.
