Abstracts
One of the most enhanced and evolved senses in the pig specie is smell. It participates in many physiological mechanisms of the animal such as reproduction, communication, feeding, etc. In this review, we will analyse a type of odorous substance called porcine appeasing pheromone (PAP) secreted by the sow during lactation period, to calm and appease the offspring. The pheromone uses to improve animal welfare at certain stages where immunosuppression makes the animal more vulnerable to any pathogen, improved production rates by providing a new strategy for practical use in farms.
