Summary
Reproductive efficiency in Iberian sow
The Iberian pig has lower productive and reproductive outputs than other more selected commercial breeds. This breed has a characteristic polymorphism in the leptin receptor which causes the development of leptin resistance and obesity. This feature influences on various factors affecting the reproductive output, such as puberty and prolificacy. The lower prolificacy of the Iberian pig is due to a decrease in ovulation rate or an increase in early embryo losses, two reproductive strategies that may be inherited from the wild swine that may ensure the survival of the mother and her litter.
