Ultrasonography serves as a diagnostic tool for understanding what is occurring at the microscopic level in the bovine ovary. Situations exist, however, in which genetic or nutritional influences can alter the population of microscopic follicles without altering the number of antral follicles observed on the ultrasonically, because correlations between preantral and antral follicle numbers are not 100%.
