In sheep, prenatal exposure to testosterone masculinizes both the external genitalia and the ovine sexually dimorphic nucleus (oSDN) of the hypothalamus-preoptic area of the fetal brain. The present study tested the hypothesis that temporally separate critical periods exist for masculinization of the external genitalia and the brain. Pregnant ewes were treated weekly with 200 mg testosterone propionate (TP) either from Day 30 to 60 (Early TP) or Day 60 to 90 (Late TP) of gestation.
