Se necesitan varios factores para el desarrollo de la infección además de la simple presencia del hongo. Los factores del hospedador son importantes, como la juventud (gatitos, cachorros), enfermedades debilitantes, estado inmunitario comprometido (por enfermedades o fármacos), mala nutrición o estrés.
