INTRODUCTION
A yellowish staining of the skin and mucous membranes defines the clinical state of jaundice or icterus and results from increased plasmatic levels of bilirubin and other bilous pigments. Causes of jaundice are numerous and some of them can be explored with diagnostic imaging. Ultrasound is by far the most frequently used imaging modality in the diagnostic approach of jaundice.
Understanding the pathophysiology and the causes of jaundice may help better define the place of ultrasound in the management of a yellow pet.
1. PLACE OF ULTRASOUND IN THE DIAGNOSTIC APPROACH OF JAUNDICE
1.1. METABOLISM OF BILIRUBIN
The normal plasmatic bilirubin concentration does not exceed 0.4 mg/dL, and results from an equilibrium between three mechanisms including :
> the production of unconjugated bilirubin that results from erythrocyte destruction,
> the uptake and conjugation of unconjugated bilirubin by the hepatocytes,
> the excretion of conjugated bilirubin into the duodenum via bile canaliculi, the gallbladder and the common bile duct.
