Consultations on repetitive behaviours and self-mutilation are not as frequent as those relating to other behavioural problems, such as aggression, dog separation-related problems or inappropriate elimination in cats. However, if occurring, they might indicate a compromised welfare and must therefore be always diagnosed and treated.
Clinical presentation
In the field of Behavioural Medicine, compulsive disorders encompass a set of behaviours that appear repeatedly, with a relatively invariable pattern of movements, out of context, without an apparent purpose, that affect the adaptation and functionality of the animal.
The most common patterns in dogs include tail chasing, walking in circles, lights or shadows chasing and acral lick dermatitis. In cats, the most common ones are tail mutilation, psychogenic alopecia and compulsive sucking1.
They usually appear between the period immediately prior to puberty and the arrival of social maturity, most of the time in response to an episode of stress or anxiety.
