Abordaje racional
Los signos gastrointestinales (GI) crónicos son uno de los problemas cuyo diagnóstico y tratamiento en gatos es más frustrante para muchos veterinarios. Una resolución incompleta del problema puede causar insatisfacción al propietario y el sufrimiento potencial del animal. Se suelen administran antibióticos de forma imprudente a los gatos con diarrea o vómitos, con la una atribución a menudo errónea de la resolución de los signos clínicos gracias a la erradicación de un "supuesto" agente patógeno infeccioso. La diarrea o vómitos crónicos se caracterizan por signos GI persistente, intermitentes o recidivantes de 3-4 semana de duración o más. A diferencia de los signos GI agudos, que suelen ser un problema autolimitante y no suelen requerir un estudio diagnóstico completo del gato, los casos de diarrea y/o vómitos crónicos justifican un abordaje paso a paso para llegar al diagnóstico y formular un plan terapéutico óptimo. La historia y examen físico son de suma importancia para determinar si los signos GI están causados por enfermedad primaria del tracto GI o son secundarios a problemas extraintestinales(Tabla 1).
