HEMOTÓRAX
No existe una definición estándar de lo que es el hemotórax en veterinaria, ya que el hematocrito del derrame depende del hematocrito de la sangre periférica. El hemotórax se puede definir como un derrame del espacio pleural con un hematocrito un 25% superior al de la sangre periférica. Al intentar diferenciar entre hemorragia iatrogénica y un verdadero derrame hemorrágico, la presencia de eritrofagocitosis y la ausencia de coágulos de sangre respaldan el diagnóstico de hemotórax.
Existen varias posibles causas de hemotórax tanto en gatos como en perros. Para determinar la etiología subyacente, puede resultar útil saber si se ha producido un traumatismo (romo, punzante o iatrogénico). La anamnesis puede dirigirse a determinar si el animal ha sido atropellado, ha pasado por una intervención torácica recientemente, por una toracocentesis, por un aspirado intratorácico con aguja fina, una venipunción o la inserción de un catéter en la yugular.
