Dermatological consequences of obesity in humans
Obesity is widely recognized as an epidemic in the western world among human beings, but its impact on the skin has received minimal attention. In humans, dermatological conditions associated with obesity may be caused (true skin manifestations of obesity) or aggravated by it.
Dermatoses associated with the physical effects of obesity are venous stasis and venous ulcers, lymphedema and cellulitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, intertrigo with skin infection (especially candidiasis), stretch marks and skin tags.
Dermatoses associated with metabolic disorders are acanthosis nigricans (sign of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia in obese patients), acne, hirsutism and androgenic alopecia. In addition, there is growing evidence to suggest obesity as a risk factor for developing psoriasis.
