The best way to treat hypoxia is an appropriate prevention. Therefore, human mistakes, anaesthetic equipment failures, depressive effects of general anaesthesia and concomitant cardiorespiratory disorders that accelerate or exacerbate its development or consequences should be considered among the most common triggering factors. Oxygen supply failures, mistakes during orotracheal intubation (oesophageal or bronchial intubation), airway (more common in brachycephalic breeds and patients with laryngeal paralysis or tracheal collapse) or orotracheal tube (neck forced postures, obstruction due to discharge or bending) blockage, as well as respiratory failure scenarios that are out of the scope of this lecture. It is important to keep the permeability of the airway and correct cardiorespiratory function under anaesthesia (according to the ABD algorithm: airway, breathing and circulation), preventing problems and/or providing the correct external support to solve them and thus avoiding tissue hypoxia.
