Blocked cats are arguably the most common condition seen in practice that is life threatening yet potentially completely curable. Success rates for unblocking and survival can and should approach 100%. This depends upon prompt and accurate assessment of each case, careful stabilisation and optimal treatment. Optimal management of the cat with urethral obstruction is made challenging by certain problems and popular misconceptions. Optimal management needs to be thorough and aggressive and should follow a logical course starting with assessment and stabilisation.
Initial assessment
- Streamlined major body system assessment to identify signs of hypoperfusion which may be profound.
- Bradycardia is common in severely affected cats and contributes significantly to their hypoperfusion, however these cats are also hypovolvaemic.
