Alopecia X has gone by many names including adult-onset hyposomatotropism, growth hormoneresponsive alopecia, pseudo-Cushings disease, castration-responsive alopecia, biopsyresponsive alopecia, and, more recently, adrenal hyperplasia-like syndrome. The pathomechanisms of the alopecia is currently not known. Diagnosis is based on the characteristic alopecia without systemic signs of disease. Dogs should be screened for endocrine disease regardless of lack of systemic signs. Histopathology is recommended to confirm that the alopecia is non-inflammatory and help rule out inflammatory causes of alopecia such as sebaceous adenitis, which can also be seen in similar breeds. Treatment is aimed at inducing the anagen phase of the hair cycle. It must be emphasized to owners that there is no one guaranteed treatment for alopecia X and, if successful, hair growth following treatment may not be permanent. […]
