    L’esercizio terapeutico è una delle più valide modalità utilizzate nella riabilitazione fisica del cane. Alcuni suoi scopi sono il miglioramento dell’escursione attiva dei movimenti che è possibile compiere senza dolore, l’irrobustimento della massa e della forza muscolare, l’equilibrio, il rendimento delle funzioni giornaliere e la capacità aerobica; inoltre, contribuisce a prevenire ulteriori danni ed a ridurre il peso e la zoppia. L’attrezzatura necessaria è relativamente poco costosa ed è possibile applicare principi simili ad una gran varietà di individui e condizioni diverse. Man mano che l’animale migliora e la condizione tissutale progredisce, il piano dell’esercizio deve essere modificato in modo da adattarsi ai progressi del paziente.

    ESERCIZI IN STAZIONE

    I pazienti con gravi lesioni possono non essere in grado di mantenere la stazione e sostenere il proprio peso corporeo. Gli esercizi in stazione possono irrobustire gli animali, contribuire all’allenamento propriocettivo ed incrementare il benessere psicologico del paziente. Gli scopi degli esercizi assistiti sono quelli di incoraggiare la funzione neuromuscolare, rieducare i muscoli e sviluppare forza e vigore della muscolatura di sostegno. Sono candidati agli esercizi in stazione gli animali con molteplici lesioni ortopediche o colpiti da affezioni neurologiche.

    Per eseguire gli esercizi in stazione, si fa passare un’imbracatura o un telo sotto la parte craniale del torace e/o quella caudale dell’addome per le condizioni che colpiscono, rispettivamente, gli arti anteriori, quelli posteriori o entrambi. Gli arti dell’animale vengono collocati nella normale posizione in stazione, con le estremità appoggiate sul terreno in modo da formare un rettangolo. Il cane deve essere incoraggiato a sostenere il proprio peso corporeo e bisogna offrirgli solo l’assistenza necessaria a mantenere la posizione in stazione. Mentre sostiene l’animale, l’operatore allenta lentamente la tensione del sistema di sospensione, permettendo al soggetto di continuare a caricare il proprio peso fino a che è in grado di reggerlo. Se il cane inizia a collassare, l’imbracatura viene delicatamente tirata verso l’alto in modo da aiutare il paziente a tornare nella posizione in stazione e si ripete l’esercizio. Anche se la durata di ogni sessione deve adattarsi alla tolleranza dell’animale, inizialmente ci si propone di effettuare 10-15 serie ripetute 2 o 3 volte al giorno, aumentando gradualmente fino a 5 minuti per sessione.
