Read
While every effort has been made to assure the accurate dosages of a medication, it is essential that the user read current label recommendations prior to using on a patient. Certain drug dosages and procedures are based on reports, personal experience and unpublished data that may be different than those recommended by the manufacturer. Readers are urged to view the recommendations with this in mind. If the reader is unfamiliar with a drug or a procedure, further and more detailed information should be sought prior to implementation. Please check government regulations for USDA approved drugs. The veterinarian treating a foal is responsible for reviewing each medication dosage or indication and making their own decision for a specific treatment approach to an individual foal.
This is not intended to be a text. It should not be considered the final word nor be the limit of reading needed to be competent in the care of newborn foals. All material is presented as information and is not meant as specific recommendations. The EC’s are not to be considered specific advice or recommendations but are merely for the reader’s consideration. Current textbooks and review articles should be consulted to provide background for those unfamiliar with procedures and drugs. The material in the manual is not the original ideas, thoughts or experiences solely of the authors and editors. It has been obtained by the many researchers, practitioners throughout the world who have presented clinical material on neonatal foals verbally at meetings or in written form. I have chosen to avoid exhaustive reference sections and have often quoted summary presentations of papers or texts which can and should be reviewed for further information. The reader is advised that suggestions and procedures will change rapidly as new information is developed in equine neonatology. The purchaser and/or user of this manual assumes total responsibility for all risks and outcomes related to the use of information, procedures, diagnostic approaches and medical treatments contained in the Manual. The editor and contributors assume no liability for any injury, and/or damage to persons or property arising out of or related to use of material within this Manual.
