Dear Readers,
This edition of the Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine (IJVM) celebrates the centenary
of the founding in 1922 of the Israel Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA). This is
indeed a great moment in the history of the State of Israel and an illustrious event for the
people of Israel. All of this happened after some two thousand years of Exile and even before the establishment of the State of Israel, in May 1948.
One hundred years later, Veterinary Medicine in Israel has taken great steps and become one of the world leaders in the profession. We now have a School of Veterinary Medicine associated with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, linked to a high-status Veterinary Hospital.
The statutory status of the Israel Veterinary Association has allowed for the development of
the various £elds of specialization which have been added to include many possibilities. All this has happened through the work of dedicated idealists and intellectuals who chose to rebuild a Jewish Homeland in Israel after years of persecution, maltreatment and oppression.
Without their unwavering efforts, this would never have happened. Proudly, Veterinary Medicine has also been represented in the “Hi-Tech” of our “Start-up Nation” among others, in the £eld of Dairy Science and in the discipline of infectious diseases of both large and small animals.
Through 12 years in the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine (IJVM), I am proud and honoured to be the Editor of the Journal at this important historic event.
This journal is especially important and full of exceptional articles, three of which are reviews.
Firstly, Prof. Pipano has published a detailed and well-documented article entitled: “A Review of One hundred Years of Veterinary Parasitology in the Land of Israel”. This unique article covers research into many parasitological diseases, which the £rst veterinarians had to deal with and overcome. In my opinion, this work documents the true spirit of pioneering, endeavor and love to the Land. The research covered, largely enabled the success and realization of animal agriculture in Israel and the results assisted veterinarians worldwide. The list of references for this review article covers many international journals, some of which are of the highest standard. Reading the review article, I am proud of our association with such groundbreaking and idealist veterinary scientists. I strongly advise reading this trailblazing review. Thank you to Prof. Pipano for writing this article and allowing its publication in the IJVM. It has been an honor to publish this review in the IJVM celebrating the centenary of our veterinary association. The second review article deals with Foot-and-Mouth disease in Israel. In this article, by Dr. Etinger et al., have summarized and graphically presented the history of the disease in Israel. They have also added information, both clinical and epidemiological, relating to the 2021 outbreak in the North of Israel. The third review article by Prof. Pozzi et al. covers vaccination programs for swine in Israel. Prof. Pozzi has published extensively on pig diseases in Israel and this article serves as a significant contribution to this branch of agriculture in Israel.
Wishing all our readers a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Trevor (Tuvia) Waner
Editor-in-Chief, Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine
