Sadly, Prof. Reuven Yagil passed away on the 3rd of February, 2020.
He was born in Johannesburg South Africa in 1935 and make Aliyah in 1955. His Aliyah was initiated by his desire to serve in the Israel Defence Force (IDF) just prior to the Sinai Campaign in 1956, in which he served. For a few years, he lived on Kibbutz Yizre’el and later at Moshav HaBonim. Reuven completed his veterinary studies in The Netherlands at the University of Utrecht in 1969 with a cum laude.
Reuven was associated with the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba where he accomplished a prolific amount of research for which he received international acclaim. Reuven was the first incumbent of the Bennie Slome Chair of Applied Research for Improving Food Resources in Arid Zones at BenGurion University of the Negev.
Among the subjects he researched was dehydration physiology, camel physiology and camel diseases. He also devoted a great deal of his research to the therapeutic properties of camel milk.
I met Reuven and worked with him both at his clinic and at the Ben Gurion University. Personally, he helped me a great deal to integrate into Israel when I made Aliyah in 1977, for which I am eternally grateful.
Reuven was a source of ideas and plans and an inspiration to all those working with him.
A devoted Zionist and lover of the Land of Israel, he will be dearly missed.
Condolences to his family,
Dr. Trevor (Tuvia) Waner
