The effect of the timing of cut (t) on ruminal pH of animals consuming fresh temperate forages was studied during August (winter). Three groups of animals -four Corriedale×Milkschaf lambs (25 ± 0.86 kg BW), four Holstein heifers (145 ± 5.7 kg BW) and four dry Holstein cows (671 ± 109.5 kg BW)- were individually fed fresh pasture (grass and legume mix). The forage was offered to the animals at 7:00 or at 18:00 h (t), arranging each group to a cross-over design (2 animals, 2 periods of 17 days each). Lambs and heifers were housed in metabolic cages. The forage was offered during 4 hours ad libitum, immediately after cutting. Cows were staked during 4 hours/day, and consumed the forage by direct graze. Ruminal pH was determined each hour (h) from 0 to 6 hours relative to time of the beginning of the ingestion, using permanent ruminal tubes. Data were analyzed as repeated measures using the mixed model for each group (lambs, heifers or cows) and for the groups altogether ...
