Digital dermatitis is highly contagious and the good response to antibiotic treatment suggests that DD is caused by a bacterial infection. A mixed population of gram-negative bacteria, including anaerobes, microaerophilic organisms, and spirochetes have been demonstrated in or isolated from DD lesions however the exact cause of DD is still unknown. But it is said a major risk factor is the high moisture level in the areas where cows stand.
