The poisonous plants covered in this book are those that are commonly and not so commonly grown as house and/or garden plants in North America and other areas of the world. The list of poisonous plants is not exhaustive, but rather the book attempts to provide information on those plants that have been documented as toxic to animals and people, or have good potential for poisoning. Undoubtedly, more plants will be added to those in this book as new plant species are introduced to the environments in which house hold plants live! The author has made every effort to use botanically accurate names for plants although the ever changing taxonomy of plant names can make it difficult to satisfy all taxonomists!
Although the book gives general treatment guidelines for each of the plants, specific details of appropriate drugs, their doses, and supportive therapy are not given because of the great variability in the patient’s history, and symptoms. Where plant poisoning is suspected it is critical that a Poison Control Center such as the National Animal Poison Control Center (1 888 4ANI HELP), and/or a knowledgeable veterinarian be consulted as soon as possible.
