Terminology
Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is the general all-encompassing term to describe erosive and ulcerative diseases of the equine stomach. Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD) distinguish the affected region of the stomach. Within ESGD, both primary and secondary disease is recognized: primary ESGD occurs in horses with normal gastric emptying; whereas secondary ESGD occurs in animals with delayed gastric emptying due to an underlying pathology such as pyloric stenosis.
