The direct and close contact between pets and humans facilitates transfer of microorganisms (Lloyd, 2007). In the Netherlands about half of the cats and dogs
share the bed with the owner confirming the intense contact (Chomel and Sun, 2011). Transmission between pets and their owners has indeed been shown for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (Davis et al., 2012) and also for E. coli the presence of homologous strains in humans and companion animals in the same household has been documented (Platell et al., 2011).
