Heads up; Practical relevance of technical aspects in equine radiography
Introduction
It all started a century ago with Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen; the discovery of these magic and unknown rays (therefore called “X”-rays) that could penetrate the body and expose internal structures. Radiography was born. Since then, radiography has evolved tremendously due to the introduction of revolutionary techniques. Screen- film or conventional radiography has been the golden standard for years with the use of photosensitive films, intensifying screens and for a long time a cumbersome development of these films.
The introduction of automatic developers improved the speed of this process however many artefacts can develop during this process. Also proper storage of the radiographic studies and retrieval for reviewing can be a burden and lengthy process. During the last two decades the introduction of computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR) has been “quickly” replacing these film screen systems, at first in human medicine and later in veterinary medicine. Nowadays CR and DR in equine practice is common good and used all around the world. In this presentation, the technical aspects of these radiographic systems, its pitfalls and how to optimize your radiographic acquisition will be discussed. […]
