Complications in TTA surgery
Complication rates depend on the definition of what is a complication. Minor complications such as edema, redness of the wound, wound dehiscence due to auto mutilation and superficial infections can increase the overall percentage of complication rates, irrespective of the surgical technique that has been applied on the stifle. Major complications mostly require revision surgery and represent a more technique related influence. Complications can be classified as intra-operative, shortterm (14 d). The overall success rate of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) surgery is around 90%, world-wide. For TPLO procedures, the overall complication rate is 18.9 - 28%. Short-term complications are mostly incision site related. The listed long term complications are patellar ligamentosis, tibial fracture, periosteal reaction, osteomyelitis, subsequent meniscal injury, implant loosening, screw breakage, retained surgical sponge (draining tract), fibular fracture, patellar fracture, septic arthritis and luxation of the long digital extension.
