A case report of a lower back pain patient treated with orthomanual veterinary medicine and its results with pressure plate measurements
Charly, a 2.5 year old female neutered crossbreed dog with a weight of 21.4 kg was referred to the clinic for orthomanual veterinary medicine with unwillingness to jump into the car. A CT-scan of the lower back was included showing lumbosacral instability. Physical, neurological and orthopaedic examinations were conducted revealing pain during palpation of the lumbosacral region and lumbosacral instability. Concurrent orthopaedic, neurological or systemic disorders were excluded. Based on the clinical signs, physical, neurological and orthopaedic examinations and the CT-scan lower back pain was diagnosed.
Lower back pain is a frequently observed disease which occurs mostly in older dogs of large till giant breeds. Initial signs start with unwillingness to jump and expressions of pain in the lumbosacral spine region. Numerous diseases can cause lower back pain. Degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) is frequently diagnosed.(1,2) With radiography and/or MRI/CT the cause of lower back pain can be confirmed. Currently several therapy strategies are developed for DLSS with various results. Therapy can consist of cage rest, medication and surgery or a combination of these therapies. Research shows that both the force plate and pressure plate can be used to evaluate the gait.(3,4) Research with the force plate shows no difference in vertical force between the control group and the dogs with DLSS after standard surgical dorsal laminectomy.(5) […]
