the management of the bleeding patient, particularly the patient with catastrophic hemorrhage, represents a real challenge to the practitioner who must simultaneously address the cause or mechanism of the bleeding as well as the local and systemic con- sequences. in addition, ongoing massive hemorrhage and its management, can exacer- bate bleeding resulting in a vicious cycle.
This presentation will review the principles and priorities of bleeding management, the treatment of some common causes of bleeding, the practical uses and misuses of trans- fusion (red cells, plasma, platelets), the possible indications and uses of prohemostatic agents, and the prevention of bleeding via proactive assessment and planning.
