Dogs are trained and used for all kind of tasks. Some of these tasks demands a very high physical fitness of these dogs. At the start of the training most institutions screen their dogs on physical ailments and from most dogs can be assumed that they are sound and fit at the start of their training.
The costs of training and maintaining the level of performance are relatively high. It can be financially beneficial to monitor the dogs on several workload dependant parameters to detect a decrease in performance in an early stage in the elder working dog. Beside this argument animal welfare is an important issue. Work- ing dogs are in principle happy dogs as long as they can work without physical problems. But not all work is as harmless as one may expect. For example, the police dog is a working dog at risk for injuries.
Nearly all dogs are under veterinairy control and are treated when injured or ill. At this moment it is unusual to look at work-related stress and monitor this throughout the career of the dog. By monitoring the dog it is possible to detect a decrease in physical fitness which in turn can be treated relatively simple. Training can be a major part in it. In human ergonomics, physical fitness and training proved to be worth to monitor. In this presentation we will look at the workload of different kinds of work.
