Pelage terne, xérose

La luisance du pelage est liée à la composition du sébum secrété par les glandes sébacées et stocké dans les follicules pileux. Les lipides entrant dans la composition du sébum sont spécifiques de l’espèce et chez le chien, spécifiques de la race (Dunstan et coll, 2000), mais la production et la qualité du sébum est également influencée par l’alimentation (Macdonald et coll, 1983). La sécheresse cutanée (xérose) survient suite à une baisse de la teneur en eau. L’augmentation des pertes en eau par évaporation peut être due à des conditions environnementales trop humides ou à une perte transépidermique en eau accrue.
