Le mot phosphore signifie éthymologiquement “porteur de lumière”. Il fut découvert en 1669 par un alchimiste allemand, Hennig Brandt: en évaporant de l’urine et en calcinant le résidu dans une cornue, il obtint en effet un dégagement de phosphore sous forme d’une vapeur qui brillait dans le noir.
Sous forme de phosphates, le phosphore entre dans la composition des os : 86 % du phosphore de l’organisme est stocké dans le squelette où il participe à leur structure.
