Después del calcio y del potasio, el sodio es el ión más abundante en el organismo. Representa cerca del 0,13% del peso corporal de un mamífero. El sodio extracelular se reparte entre el esqueleto (43% del sodio total), líquido intersticial (29%) y plasma (12%). El resto del sodio está localizado principalmente en el interior de las células.
El sodio desempeña varias funciones esenciales:

mantiene el equilibrio de la presión osmótica entre el medio intracelular y el extracelular y regula el volumen de líquido extracelular. Su función reguladora del equilibrio hídrico le confiere un papel importante en la aparición de la sensación de sed y la diuresis;
