Los ácidos grasos omega-3 constituyen una familia particular dentro de la categoría de los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGPI). Su precursor es el ácidolinolénico (C18:3, n-3). Su estructura química es diferente a la del ácido linoleico (C18: 2, n-6), precursor de la otra familia importante: los ácidos grasos omega-6.

El ácido linoleico es un ácido graso esencial para el gato. Debe aportarse a través del alimento para cubrir sus necesidades. A excepción del ácido docosahexaenoico (DHA), los ácidos grasos de la serie omega-3 no están considerados como esenciales, ya que los gatos pueden sobrevivir con un alimento que no los contenga.
