La arginina es un aminoácido esencial para el gato que interviene en la síntesis de numerosas proteínas. También desempeña funciones esenciales:
- es un intermediario obligatorio para la síntesis de la urea
- es el precursor de la síntesis del óxido nítrico y de aminas biogénicas
- por último, estimula la secreción de varias hormonas como insulina, glucagón y gastrina.
Consecuencias de la deficiencia de arginina
Es evidente que para el crecimiento de un gatito es indispensable el aporte suficiente de arginina en su alimentación, pero también debemos recordar que el gato adulto es extremadamente sensible a la deficiencia de arginina, incluso leve. Cuando la dieta es alta en aminoácidos, pero sin arginina, se presentan signos de intoxicación amoniacal entre 1 y 3 horas tras su consumo.
