Se sabe desde hace mucho tiempo que la restricción del alimento puede aumentar la longevidad de numerosas especies, entre ellas el perro (McCay y col., 1935; Weindruch y Walford, 1988; Kealy y col., 1992, 1997, 2000, 2002; Lane y col., 1998; Larson y col., 2003; Lawler y col., 2005).
