Después de la alteración de la función de las células del páncreas, la segunda característica más importante de la DM2 humana y de la DM felina, es la resistencia a la insulina. La resistencia a la insulina, o menor sensibilidad a la insulina se caracteriza por una respuesta reducida de los tejidos diana de la insulina, frente a una determinada cantidad de insulina.
