La evaluación nutricional permite identificar a los pacientes que requieren soporte nutricional inme- diato y también a los pacientes en los que el soporte nutricional disminuye el riesgo de malnutrición. La evaluación nutricional no se basa simplemente en diagnosticar malnutrición sino también en determinar si dicha malnutrición tendrá un impacto en la evolución clínica. En la actualidad el soporte nutricional está indicado si hay un historial de enfermedad o pérdida de peso, mala condición corporal o una pérdida aguda del 5% del peso corporal, así como un historial de anorexia o inapetencia, real o prevista, de más de 3 días de duración.
