En todo el mundo, la causa más frecuente de FLUTD es la cistitis idiopática felina tanto en machos como hembras (Kruger y col., 199I; Buffington y col., 1997; Osborne y col., 2000; Lekcharoensuk y col., 2001a; Gerber y col., 2005) (Figuras 1, 2, 3).
La urolitiasis constituye la segunda causa más frecuente de FLUTD. Los urolitos pueden formarse en cualquier lugar del tracto urinario, pero la gran mayoría se localizan en la vejiga (Cannon y col., 2007). La mayor parte de los urolitos de la vejiga están compuestos por fosfato amónico magnésico (estruvita) o por oxalato cálcico. Por el contrario, los nefrolitos están compuestos típicamente por oxalato cálcico (Lulich y col., 1994).
