La International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) ha propuesto un sistema de clasificación general de la ERC en el gato (y el perro), aprobado tanto por la Sociedad Americana de Nefrología y Urología Veterinaria como por la Europea (ASVNU y ESVNU). El sistema de clasificación debe aplicarse una vez realizado el diagnóstico de ERC. Este sistema se basa en los resultados de la exploración clínica y laboratorial y, únicamente cuando el paciente se encuentra estable, nunca cuando está en una fase aguda de la enfermedad que requiera tratamiento para la crisis urémica.
El sistema de clasificación se basa en los niveles de creatinina plasmática. Los miembros de la IRIS son conscientes de las limitaciones de este enfoque, ya que la creatinina plasmática puede verse influenciada por:
• la masa muscular
• el estado de hidratación
• la composición de la dieta.
