La obesidad en el hombre, es un verdadero problema social (Kopelman, 2000); las cifras actuales revelan que casi las dos terceras partes de los adultos en Estados Unidos tienen sobrepeso o son obesos (Flegal y cols., 2002). Los estudios de prevalencia de la obesidad en animales de compañía son más limitados. Estu- dios llevados a cabo en diferentes países sitúan la prevalencia de la obesidad en la población canina entre el 22% y el 50% (McGreevy y col., 2005; Colliard y col., 2006; Holmes y col., 2007). En los gatos, la infor- mación se reduce a unos pocos estudios en los últimos treinta años y además sin utilizar las mismas defi- niciones de sobrepeso y obesidad, ni las mismas técnicas de evaluación de la condición corporal (Sloth, 1992; Robertson, 1999; Russell y col., 2000; Harper, 2001; Lund y col., 2005).
