El hígado es esencial para la digestión, la absorción, metabolismo y reserva de la mayoría de los nutrientes (Tabla 1). Por tanto, la enfermedad hepática suele conducir a un estado de malnutrición que agrava el proceso patológico y dificulta el pronóstico (Center, 1996; LaFlamme, 1999). Por tanto, es imprescindible instaurar el correcto manejo dietético, ya que si se aplica precozmente, se puede reducir la morbilidad y la mortalidad. La nutrición asistida es el único tratamiento eficaz para los gatos con anorexia y lipidosis hepática idiopática.
En las alteraciones hepáticas agudas, el principal objetivo del tratamiento es el mantenimiento del paciente mientras el hígado se regenera, y se puede producir la completa recuperación del paciente.
