La mayoría de los gatos diabéticos son mayores de 7 años. Los síntomas clásicos son la poliuria osmótica que se desarrolla tras la hiperglucemia, polidipsia secundaria y, a menudo, polifagia. Un gran porcentaje de gatos diabéticos presenta sobrepeso en el momento de realizar el diagnóstico (Figura 2). Puede darse la pérdida de peso a pesar del aumento del apetito, pero los gatos suelen tener sobrepeso cuando van a la consulta del veterinario por primera vez. En la primera consulta, es muy raro que el gato esté muy delgado.
Algunos gatos diabéticos presentan letargia debido a la deshidratación. La neuropatía diabética puede provocar debilidad de las extremidades posteriores y marcha plantígrada (Figura 3). Las extremidades posterio- res pueden estar atrofiadas. La lipidosis hepática puede provocar hepatomegalia. Las complicaciones de la diabetes pueden ser de origen infeccioso como la estomatitis o cistitis. […]
