    L’insorgenza e lo spettro degli eventi clinici e patologici che si verificano nei pazienti con insufficienza renale cronica varia in funzione della natura, della gravità, della durata e della velocità di progressione della nefropatia, oltre che della presenza o assenza di una malattia coesistente. I riscontri anamnestici sono rappresentati da anoressia, depressione, debolezza, letargia, perdita di peso, alitosi, nausea, vomito, diarrea, melena, poliuria e polidipsia. Nel corso dell’esame clinico si possono notare pallore delle mucose, disidratazione, ipotermia, stomatite, ulcere orali, mantello secco ed opaco e condizione corporea sca- dente. La palpazione addominale rivela reni piccoli e irregolari. Sulla base dei dati relativi a razza, anam- nesi familiare ed età di insorgenza della nefropatia (Tabella 1), si devono sospettare cause congenite e familiari di insufficienza renale cronica. Alcuni pazienti vengono portati alla visita presentando poliuria e polidipsia come unico segno anamnestico, mentre in altri casi si può riconoscere un’isostenuria rilevata nel corso di uno screening di laboratorio effettuato nell’ambito di un controllo geriatrico di routine o in previsione di un’anestesia.
